Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Want To Know Before Booking Your First Taekwondo Classes in Merrimack

The questions we hear most often, answered honestly. If something is missing, call us at 603-881-5435 and we will answer it directly.

What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and Olympic sport known for its emphasis on dynamic kicking techniques, precise footwork, and disciplined character development. The name translates literally as ‘the way of the foot and fist.’ It combines physical training — including poomsae (patterns), kyorugi (sparring), and kyukpa (breaking) — with the Five Tenets of Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. Taekwondo Classes in Merrimack introduce students to all of these elements from their very first session.

Is Taekwondo or Karate better?

Both are respected martial arts with real value. Taekwondo emphasizes dynamic kicking, fast footwork, and Olympic-style sparring, and is one of only two martial arts featured in the Olympic Games. Karate places more emphasis on hand strikes and a different set of traditional forms. The better choice depends on your personal goals. If you are interested in high-energy stand-up techniques, athletic sparring, and a proven character development framework, Taekwondo is an excellent fit for children, teens, and adults alike.

Is Taekwondo or Jiu-Jitsu better?

Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are built around very different skill sets. Taekwondo lessons have a striking art that develops powerful kicks, quick reflexes, balance, and stand-up self-defense. Jiu-Jitsu focuses on ground-based grappling and submission techniques. For families, children, and teens looking for a structured program that builds character, fitness, and confidence alongside practical self-defense, Taekwondo is a strong and well-established choice. Both arts have genuine merit — the right one depends on your specific goals.

What is so special about Taekwondo Classes in Merrimack?

What makes Taekwondo distinct is that physical skill and personal character are developed together, not separately. The Five Tenets — Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit — are not just posted on the wall. They are practiced in every class until they become part of how a student thinks and acts. Taekwondo is also one of the most scalable disciplines available: it can be trained at age 4 or 64, at any fitness level, and continues to offer new challenges and rewards for as long as you train.

What are the main benefits of practicing Taekwondo?

Regular Taekwondo lessons builds cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, and balance. Beyond the physical, students consistently develop improved focus, emotional regulation, self-confidence, and discipline that carries into school, work, and daily relationships. For children, parents frequently notice improvements in classroom behavior and social confidence within the first few months. For adults, the combination of physical challenge and mental focus makes it one of the most complete training practices available.

What skills does Taekwondo focus on?

Taekwondo training covers four main skill areas: poomsae (patterns or forms that develop technique and discipline), kyorugi (sparring that builds timing, speed, and competitive skill), kyukpa (breaking that demonstrates power and precision), and self-defense application. Students also develop footwork, balance, coordination, and the mental focus required to execute techniques under pressure. Every skill area is introduced progressively, so students at any level always have something clear to work toward.

What is the difference between Olympic Taekwondo and traditional Taekwondo?

Olympic Taekwondo lessons focuses on fast, competitive sparring under World Taekwondo Federation rules, with an emphasis on speed, footwork, and scoring techniques to the torso and head. Traditional Taekwondo places greater emphasis on poomsae (patterns), self-defense applications, breaking, and the philosophical principles of the art. At our dojang, students train both — gaining the depth of traditional practice alongside the athletic sharpness of the Olympic style. This produces a more complete and well-rounded practitioner.

Does Taekwondo Classes in Merrimack focus more on kicks or punches?

Taekwondo is predominantly known for its kicking techniques — approximately 70 percent of sparring scoring opportunities come from kicks. The art includes a wide variety of kicks, from basic front kicks and roundhouse kicks to jumping and spinning techniques. Hand techniques, including blocks, punches, and strikes, are also an essential part of the curriculum, particularly in self-defense and traditional poomsae practice. Students develop both skill sets as they progress through the belt system.

How long does it take to progress through Taekwondo belts?

Progress depends on your training frequency, effort, and consistency. For students attending classes 3 days per week, the first color belt typically comes within the first month, and a black belt is achievable within approximately 10 years of consistent training. Every belt at our school has clear, specific technical requirements — promotions are earned through demonstrated skill and conduct, not simply through time or membership. You will always know exactly what is required for your next step.

What equipment or uniform do you need for Taekwondo?

When you attend your first Taekwondo class, all you need is comfortable clothing you can move in — no special equipment is required to get started. Once you enroll, you will receive a dobok (Taekwondo uniform), which is worn for all regular classes and gradings. As you advance, additional equipment such as sparring gear — including foot protectors, hand protectors, a headguard, and a mouthguard — will be introduced gradually. Our team will guide you on what to acquire and when, so there are no surprises.
